On the streets of Bali you see many little offerings on the streets or in front of houses. I asked local people what the meaning of this was. They told me the demons are everywhere in Bali. The local people of the island believe in good and evil forces and the Balinese Hinduism teaches a respectful relationship with nature. A Balinese is raised from birth with many rites that accompany him beyond the grave. These rites are daily executed by all spiritual Balinese. Several times a day the families bring small offerings to the gods and demons. These “offerings” are different each time in their combination. It depends on the ceremony.
What you sacrifice for a demon? Yes, that is : Evil spirits love booze ,cigarettes ,rice and biscuits ( what a demon really needs ). Depending on which ceremonies are in the calendar, there are also small chewing gum or a banana in the patera, which varies on a daily basis. Additionally scented sticks are put in. Mostly in the evenings. The offerings are made with effort. People take it serious here. You can buy the little baskets and flowers in little stands at the side walks. The funny thing is: In traffic, on shopping streets and throughout everyday, life is calm for Balinese people. They simply remain always calm. Maybe due to the fact they sacrificed the offering for their karma and they know nothing bad can happen 😉 But still people just drive all over the offerings with their scooters, which is really weird.
