Selamat datang and welcome to one of my best experiences so far.
I went to bed very early hoping I could sleep a little bit before we got started on our adventure. At one o´clock at night my friends and I got picked up by our driver to go to the northern part of the island.
Our destination: the volcano Batur. The plan was to climb the Batur during the night so we could see the sunrise in the morning from the very top. After a long ride, we arrived at the car park at the bottom of the volcano where already so many other tourists were waiting. We had two guides walking all the way to the top with us. One in the front and one in the back. The sky was absolutely incredible. It was pitch black and full of stars.
Hundreds of people with flashlights climbed up the Batur just like us. Since there is only one way up, we had to form a human queue. Personally, I don’t think it was very exhausting but some people had problems along the way so we had to take many stops. Therefore, the queue was very slow and it took us hours to walk up the volcano.
Luckily, we reached the top of the Batur right when the sun started to rise. It seemed like we were standing in the sky the clouds at our feet. We were able to see the other Balinese volcanoes, even the biggest one on Lombok. At first, the sky turned more and more red and then after a while it changed into the yellow we are all so familiar with. It was cold and windy but we were very happy. Every trouble was forgotten and definitely worth it. We enjoyed our small breakfast while soaking in the incredible view. Unbelievable! A must see.
When the sun rose high in the sky, we decided to walk back again. On our way down, we stopped at a great cave and saw the returning bats. Our guide showed us some steaming hot stones. It was more than 30 degrees and our hands started sweating once we touched the stones.
The sun was shining and it got even hotter when we arrived at the car. On the way back, we passed beautiful rice terraces as well as fruit and coffee plantations. Everything was a healthy green and pure nature. Exactly how Bali is always imagined. By the time we got to our house in Jimbaran it was already past noon. We were gone for 12 hours! It was a long night and we were beat.
However, it was one of the best trips we did so far and I am already planning on climbing up another volcano one day…
