Hey guys, this is Patty and I´m gonna report you about one of the most popular isles of Indonesia – Lombok. I visited it after my trip to Sumbawa for about one week. My homestays there were in the well-known area called Kuta Lombok and in Ekas. Latter was a very small villige in the nowhere, literally. There wasn´t even a Warung and getting toilett paper was quite a success. However the surf sports were great, also for beginners like in Ekas Insight.
Even if the rest of Lombok is kind of “underdeveloped”, Kuta Lombok is very close to Bali. Fortunately – and that´s definitely the advantage – Lombok is much less crowded and much more inexpensive.
On the other hand, what could besides be defined as a huge disadvantage is the loss of safety. Never ever (!) drive at night with your scooter through Lombok, because this could be really dangerous. I also heard a lot of stories from people staying in Lombok, who got robbed. So here´s the second tip: Never leave you stuff somewhere. On my opinion the people in Lombok are a little bit different from the people in Bali. Many of them are very brazen and selfish. It seems like they see tourists as money machines – so be careful. I hope I didn´t scare you, though Lombok could be very nice if you pay attention to these tips. Especially when you want to begin to learn surfing, Lombok could be pretty nice. There are some surf spots for beginners and of course some surf schools. Unfortunately these spots, like Kerobokan or Dondon, are very crowded. I for myself don´t like so many people in the water, but if you´re ok with that than everything is fine. Furthermore the nature of Lombok with its mountains, palm tree forests, beautiful beaches and of course the sea is really awesome.
I can recommend you to go by plane and rent a scooter in Lombok. We drove from Uluwatu to Lombok and back and that was exhausting – pretty exhausting. It took us about ten hours. Usually you need seven hours, but sometimes the ferry takes longer because of whatever. So finally if you go by scooter you can plan the whole day for it.
In the end the trip was worth it but seriously – Bali is much more awesome.
