last weekend I went to the Gili Islands. It was my second visit there and this time I just went to the Gili Air. The Gili Islands consist of three Islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. They are located in the North-East of Bali and belong to Lombok, a big island in the East of Bali. There is no traffic on these islands, no cars, motorcycles or streets. The only way to move is by foot, bike or horse buggy. A nice difference to the quite stressful traffic in Bali. We got picked up at home at 6.30 and were driven to Padang Bai, a harbor in the East of Bali. It took about two hours because of the traffic. From there we drove about 90 minutes to Gili Air by speedboat. The transport costs to the islands and back were 350.000 Rupiah (22 €) each. I think this price is okay. Some weeks ago we also visited Gili Trawangan which is the biggest of the three islands. You can walk it in about 2 hours. You should go there and join the party boat. It’s 7 hours pure fun and I really had great time there !!! Party, great people, sea, jumping of the boat, music, sun, alcohol !!! So if you want to go partying go to Trawangan, this island has to offer some nice bars (Jiggy Jiggs).
Gili Air is the second biggest island. It’s more quiet there and for me the most peaceful place I’ve seen so far. The island is full of beach bars and restaurants. If you go to Gili Air, go to the Zip bar and try the BBQ, you can choose between many sorts of fish. I ordered a red snapper which tasted awesome. There’s also a live act nearly every night. Great atmosphere there beacause you eat directly at the beach. Advise from me: Watch the sunset at Lucky’s Bar, I think you have the best view from there. It’s amazing! We also had our accomodations there and I really liked it.
The Gili Islands in general are good places for snorkeling. Unfortunately most of the coral reefs near the islands are destroyed, nevertheless there are still many fish to see. If you are lucky you can even swim with turtles. I didn’t see any so far but some other students from goBali were able to watch some. Hopefully next time!
Next time I go to the Gilis I’ll visit Meno and I’m curious how it’s gonna be there.
