Before i came to Bali, a former student told me to contact Weda from GoBali to get in contacts to locals. I think it was the best decission i made for my Bali life cause Weda is a very lovely person. We started chattig from August on and she introduced me a lot to the balinese life, which made me feel much more excited to come here. So in the first week, she invited me to join a wedding, and today i deny a lot that i didn’t join but i felt scared to miss a class. But the next week, she asked me to join a family ceremony called “Malukat”, which means a blessing for pregnant woman. So at 5pm, Weda arrived at my place to pick me up. I felt veryy happy to drive with a local girl o
n a scooter, to get more experience how to drive here. We went for good 40minutes to Ubud to her place, cause the ceremony was in the morning and she told me to sleep at her place so that i dont have to drive alone in the morning. Entering a balinese home, i was amazed how beautiful their place is – not like us having everything in one house like kitchen, living-room and bathroom. No they have different small houses and an open kitchen and a temple.
after our breakfast, we visited the family of her husband to offering prayers, what i find the most interesting about their prayers, is the gesture before they end it. It feels or looks like, they have an energy which they can touch. Then we went to her families place, where i was introduced to her grandfather who is a priest and gives blessings to the pregnant woman called „Malukat.“
A traditional „band“ played music with drums and the woman started praying. The priest asked me if i want to pray with them, i agreed and sat down next to a woman and copied everything she did.
After every speech i had to take a flower out of my Channa, place it between my thumbs and above my forehead. In the end he came with holy water and said something and i had to drink it three times and to put it on my head and neck. It was quite an interestig experience, cause i didnt understand anything but felt very calmed.
I am very thankful to had the oppurtunity to meet Weda and her family. I hope that there will be many more ceremonies that i can join. Bali is not only about surfing and parties, it is called the island of gods or magic and you can explore that, if you want. And i think you should! 🙂
