After 5 hours of diving theory on Friday, we were now prepared for the practical part of our diver’s licence. We will dive in a pool in order to get to know our diving equipment and some rules.
We started very early in the morning – at 6.15 a.m. As it was so early, the streets were comfortably empty and it only took us 15 minutes to go from Kerobokan to Jimbaran. What a record! Being too early at the meeting point, the Quicksilver Pool in Nusa Dua, we enjoyed the waiting time looking on the harbour. We didn’t trust our eyes when we saw that the pool was empty! Diving in a pool without any water? Impossible. That’s why we drove to another hotel with a pool in a group of 20 students on the scooters. We had to drive through a security check to enter the hotel area – well, probably that seems to be normal when entering a Hilton Hotel. There were about 3 pools in the area and the sand of NusaDuaBeach was beautifully white. Unfortunately we had to concentrate on diving and had to listen the diver’s instructor how to prepare and check our equipment. After about one hour, we were ready to put the diver’s flask on our back. How heavy it was – about 12 kg on our back. But that’s not enough: we also had to put on a weight-belt on. This weight-belt had to have 10% of our body weight. Not that easy to carry outside the water. After 10 minutes we were dressed up like a typical diver: with a black long-sleeved diver’s suit on, the black jacket which can be in- or deflated, two respirators, the diver’s flask, the too heavy weight-belt, mask, snorkel and shoes in our fins. Now it’s time to go into the water and fortunately our equipment is not that heavy anymore.
First it was a strange feeling to breathe the dry oxygen out of the flask. But after a time under water we were also able to do some exercises like putting our mask of while breathing further “normally”.
The instructors arranged free Menü with a value of 250.000 Rupiah – so we could eat a fresh juice, appetizer, meal and dessert. Everything was very luxury in the Hilton Hotel and we had a special and unforgettable day in the pool. Next weekend we will explore the underwater-world of Tulamben, when we will dive in the open water.
