Since our first day in Bali a friend of mine and i met without exception only cordially, hospitable and nice people. We absolutely appreciated it! But like in every other country there is another side, wich we realised already after two weeks.
What you really should not forget is what a poor country Indonesia is! If some locals see the chance to make some extra-money, they take it straight away – not because they want to harm you, but because they need money.
On our first night out in Kuta we ran out of money and went to an ATM in a small, little and dark street, trying to get some money with the credit-card. It worked perfectly, but the card never came out again. After realizing that there is no chance to get it out, we waited until next monday and called the appropriate bank of the ATM. They told us that “the card is not even more inside of it propably was manipulated by someone”. So if you want to be on the safe side order a second card before moving to bali – we did not and had so spent a lot of time to repair that loss. You can also find ATMs in most of the Mini-Marts, wich are truly everywhere, where you at least have a cashier for help.
The second storyhat leaded us to the perception wich i discribed on top happened in front of the university. After the lessons we went to our scooters, mine has two locks for helmets. On one of them my friend locked his one (just bought 4 days ago), but when arrived at the parking area we realized it just got ripped off.
One of the Go-Bali organizers told us that it never happened before and there will be a room for our helmets available from now on where we can put them during university. Unfortunately he had to drive to the next possible shop without protection, where he had to buy a too expensive low quality helmet, but of course it would be too dangerous not wearing one in that traffic!
So always take them with you if possible, or place them inside of your scooter, never outside, even with a lock!
That text should not frighten you – like i said in the beginning we only met really awesome people – it should rememberyou to always take care of your important stuff, to minimize the risk of getting rubbed.
